Seeing her so vexed (увидев ее такой встревоженной; to vex — досаждать, раздражать, сердить; тревожить, мучить) and so changed in the face (и столь изменившейся в лице; to change — менять, изменять), the old woman asked (старуха: «старая женщина» спросила), "What's the trouble that's on you now (что тебя сейчас тревожит: «какая тревога на тебе сейчас»; trouble — беспокойство, волнение, тревога; /ср. тж./ what’s the trouble — в чем дело?)?"
"Oh! I've lost one of the shoes off my feet (я потеряла одну из туфелек: «одну из туфелек с моих ног»; to lose /lost/; foot /pl. feet/)," said Trembling.
"Don't mind that (не волнуйся об этом; to mind — возражать, быть против; волноваться, беспокоиться, тревожиться); don't be vexed (не тревожься)," said the hen-wife; "maybe it's the best thing (может быть, это лучшее событие; thing — вещь, предмет; событие) that ever happened to you (которое когда-либо случалось с тобой)."
Seeing her so vexed and so changed in the face, the old woman asked, "What's the trouble that's on you now?"
"Oh! I've lost one of the shoes off my feet," said Trembling.
"Don't mind that; don't be vexed," said the hen-wife; "maybe it's the best thing that ever happened to you."
Then Trembling gave up all the things she had to the henwife (тогда Трепещущая отдала всю одежду, которая у нее была, птичнице; thing — вещь, предмет; носильные вещи, одежда, предметы одежды), put on her old clothes (надела свою старую одежду), and went to work in the kitchen (и вернулась: «пошла» к работе в = на кухне). When the sisters came home (когда сестры вернулись: «пришли» домой), the henwife asked (птичница спросила), "Have you any news from the church (есть у вас какие-нибудь новости из церкви)?"
Then Trembling gave up all the things she had to the henwife, put on her old clothes, and went to work in the kitchen. When the sisters came home, the henwife asked, "Have you any news from the church?"
"We have indeed (конечно же, есть)," said they; "for we saw the grandest sight, today (потому что мы видели сегодня великолепнейшее зрелище; grand — грандиозный, величественный; великолепный, пышный, роскошный; sight — зрение; красивый вид, прекрасное зрелище). The strange lady came again (незнакомка: «незнакомая дама» снова пришла), in grander array than before (в еще более великолепном наряде, чем прежде; array — строй, боевой порядок; /поэт./ наряд, одеяние, облачение). On herself and the horse she rode (на ней самой и на лошади, верхом на которой она ехала; to ride /rode, ridden/) were the finest colours of the world (были самые наряднейшие цвета в мире; fine — утонченный, изящный; нарядный, блестящий), and between the ears of the horse was a bird (а между ушей лошади была птичка) which never stopped singing (которая ни разу не смолкла; never — никогда; ни разу; to stop — останавливать; останавливаться, замолкать) from the time she came (от того момента, когда она приехала; time — время; определенный момент, определенное время) till she went away (/и до тех пор,/ пока она /не/ уехала). The lady herself is the most beautiful woman ever seen by man in Erin (сама эта дама — самая красивая женщина когда-либо виданная в Ирландии)."
"We have indeed," said they; "for we saw the grandest sight today. The strange lady came again, in grander array than before. On herself and the horse she rode were the finest colours of the world, and between the ears of the horse was a bird which never stopped singing from the time she came till she went away. The lady herself is the most beautiful woman ever seen by man in Erin."
After Trembling had disappeared from the church (после того как Трепещущая исчезла из церкви), the son of the king of Omanya said to the other kings' sons (сын короля Омании сказал другим королевичам: «сыновьям королей»), "I will have that lady for my own (та дама будет только моей: «я буду иметь ту леди для себя самого»: own — собственность, принадлежность)."
They all said (все они сказали), "You didn't win her (ты /еще/ не заполучил ее; to win — выиграть, победить; заслужить, снискать, добиться, завоевать) just by taking the shoe off her foot (только тем, что снял туфельку с ее ноги), you'll have to win her by the point of the sword (тебе придется добиваться ее мечом: «острием меча»; to have to do smth. — быть должным сделать что-л.; point — точка; острие, кончик); you'll have to fight for her with us (тебе придется сражаться за нее с нами) before you can call her your own (прежде чем ты сможешь назвать ее своей собственной)."
After Trembling had disappeared from the church, the son of the king of Omanya said to the other kings' sons, "I will have that lady for my own."
They all said, "You didn't win her just by taking the shoe off her foot, you'll have to win her by the point of the sword; you'll have to fight for her with us before you can call her your own."
"Well (хорошо)," said the son of the king of Omanya (сказал сын короля Омании), "when I find the lady that shoe will fit (когда я найду даму, которой подойдет эта туфелька; to fit — соответствовать, годиться; подходить, быть впору), I'll fight for her, never fear (я буду сражаться за нее, не волнуйтесь; never — никогда; /эмоц.-усил./ нисколько, никоим образом; to fear — бояться, пугаться; опасаться, ожидать /чего-л. нежелательного/; never fear — не бойся; не беспокойся), before I leave her to any of you (прежде, чем я оставлю = уступлю ее кому-нибудь из вас; to leave /left/ — оставлять)."
"Well," said the son of the king of Omanya, "when I find the lady that shoe will fit, I'll fight for her, never fear, before I leave her to any of you."
