George said:
"You know we are on a wrong track altogether (видите ли, мы на совершенно ложном пути). We must not think of the things we could do with (мы не должны думать о вещах, которые нам могут пригодиться), but only of the things that we can't do without (а только о вещах, без которых не сможем обойтись)."
George comes out really quite sensible at times (Джордж оказывается вполне разумным иногда). You'd be surprised (вы были бы удивлены = это удивительно). I call that downright wisdom, not merely as regards the present case (я называю это явной мудростью, не только лишь касательно настоящего случая = в данном случае; downright — прямой, открытый; совершенный; сравните: downright lie — явная/наглая ложь), but with reference to our trip up the river of life, generally (но и в нашем путешествии /вверх/ по реке жизни вообще; with reference to — в отношении к, что касается). How many people, on that voyage, load up the boat till it is ever in danger of swamping with a store of foolish things (как много людей в этом плавании нагружает лодку, пока она не оказывается в опасности затопления, кучей глупых вещей; to swamp — заливать, затоплять; store — запас; изобилие; склад) which they think essential to the pleasure and comfort of the trip (которые они считают необходимыми для удовольствия и комфорта поездки; essential — существенный, неотъемлемый; важнейший), but which are really only useless lumber (но которые в действительности — лишь бесполезный хлам).
