"We won't take a tent, suggested George (мы не возьмем палатку, предложил Джордж; won't = will not); "we will have a boat with a cover (у нас будет лодка с навесом; cover — покрышка, чехол, футляр, кожух). It is ever so much simpler, and more comfortable (это намного проще и удобнее)."
It seemed a good thought, and we adopted it (это показалось хорошей мыслью, и мы приняли ее). I do not know whether you have ever seen the thing I mean (не знаю, видели ли вы когда-нибудь штуку, которую я имею в виду). You fix iron hoops up over the boat (вы укрепляете железные обручи по всей длине лодки; hoop — обод, обруч; ворота /в крокете/; кольцо), and stretch a huge canvas over them (натягиваете огромный /кусок/ брезента на них), and fasten it down all round, from stem to stern (привязываете его со всех сторон, от носа до кормы), and it converts the boat into a sort of little house (и это превращает лодку в своего рода маленький домик), and it is beautifully cosy, though a trifle stuffy (он очень уютный, хотя немного душный = в нем немного душно); but there, everything has its drawbacks, as the man said when his mother-in-law died (но у всего есть отрицательные стороны, как сказал человек, когда его теща умерла), and they came down upon him for the funeral expenses (и от него потребовали /возместить/ расходы на похороны; to come down on — набрасываться на кого-либо, требовать что-либо; expenses — расходы, затраты).

(таз, зубной порошок, бритвенные принадлежности /звучит как/похоже на французское упражнение = из учебника французского, не правда ли?/), and a couple of big towels for bathing (и пару больших полотенец для купания). I notice that people always make gigantic arrangements for bathing (я заметил, что люди всегда делают колоссальные приготовления к купанию) when they are going anywhere near the water (когда собираются куда-нибудь близко к воде), but that they don't bathe much when they are there (но не купаются много, когда оказываются там).
It is the same when you go to the sea-side (то же самое /происходит/, когда едешь на море; sea-side — морское побережье). I always determine — when thinking over the matter in London (я всегда решаю — когда обдумываю этот вопрос в Лондоне) — that I'll get up early every morning (что буду вставать рано каждое утро), and go and have a dip before breakfast (ходить окунаться перед завтраком; dip — окунание, краткое погружение; ныряние), and I religiously pack up a pair of drawers and a bath towel (и я добросовестно упаковываю трусы и купальное полотенце). I always get red bathing drawers (я всегда беру красные купальные трусы). I rather fancy myself in red drawers (я очень нравлюсь себе в красных трусах; to fancy — представлять себе, воображать; нравиться; быть о себе высокого мнения). They suit my complexion so (они так идут к цвету моего лица; complexion — цвет лица; внешний вид, облик). But when I get to the sea I don't feel somehow that I want that early morning bathe (но когда я добираюсь до моря, я чувствую почему-то, что не хочу этого раннего утреннего купания) nearly so much as I did when I was in town (так сильно, как хотел, когда был в городе).
