In the eastern world (в восточном царстве), at the sea-side was a rock (на берегу моря был утес; sea — море; side — сторона, бок; берег; seaside — морское побережье). The princess tapped it with her finger (принцесса легко ударила по нему своим пальцем), and the rock opened (и утес открылся); there was a great house inside (внутри находился огромный дом), and in the house a giant (а в доме — великан). The princess greeted him (принцесса поприветствовала его) and gave him the thimble, saying (и отдала ему наперсток, приговаривая), "You're to keep this (ты должен сохранить это; to keep — держать; хранить) so no man can get it (так, чтобы ни один человек не мог его заполучить)."

Shaking-head caught the thimble from the ground (Качающаяся голова подхватил наперсток с пола: «с земли»; to catch /caught/) and put it in his pocket (и положил его себе в карман). When she had finished conversation with the giant (когда она окончила разговор с великаном), the princess kissed him (принцесса поцеловала его), and hurried away (и поспешила прочь).

Shaking-head followed her step for step (Качающаяся голова неотступно следовал за ней: «нога в ногу»; step — шаг; step by step — шаг за шагом; step for step /with smb./ — нога в ногу с кем-л.), till they came at break of day to the castle of King Behind the Gold (пока они /не/ пришли на рассвете к замку Короля /страны по ту сторону/ Золота; break — пролом, разрыв, отверстие; первое появление; break of day — рассвет). Shaking-head went to the king's son and asked (Качающаяся голова пошел к королевскому сыну и спросил),
"Was anything given you to keep last night (не давали ли вам что-нибудь на хранение прошлой ночью: «было ли что-нибудь дано вам, чтобы сохранить, прошлой ночью»; last — последний; прошлый)?"
Shaking-head followed her step for step, till they came at break of day to the castle of King Behind the Gold. Shaking-head went to the king's son and asked,
"Was anything given you to keep last night?"
"Yes, before I came to this chamber (да, перед тем как я пришел в эту комнату) the princess gave me her thimble (принцесса дала мне свой наперсток), and told me to have it for her in the morning (и велела мне сохранить его для нее до утра: «иметь его для нее утром»)."
"Have you it now (есть ли он у вас сейчас)?" asked Shaking-head.
"It is not in my mouth (его нет у меня во рту) where I put it last night (куда я положил его прошлой ночью), it is not in the bed (его нет /и/ в моей постели); I'm afraid my head is lost (я боюсь, что пропала моя голова; to lose /lost/ — терять; погибнуть, исчезнуть)," said the king's son.
"Yes, before I came to this chamber the princess gave me her thimble, and told me to have it for her in the morning."
"Have you it now?" asked Shaking-head.
"It is not in my mouth where I put it last night, it is not in the bed; I'm afraid my head is lost," said the king's son.
"Well, look at this (что ж, взгляните на это)," said Shaking-head (сказал Качающаяся голова), taking the thimble out of his pocket (вынимая наперсток из своего кармана) and giving it to him (и отдавая его королевичу: «ему»). "The whole kingdom is moving today to see your death (все королевство прибывает сегодня, чтобы увидеть вашу казнь; to move — двигаться, перемещаться; death — смерть; смертная казнь).
"Well, look at this," said Shaking-head, taking the thimble out of his pocket and giving it to him. "The whole kingdom is moving today to see your death.
