"He put the iron loops on the necks of my twelve sons (он надел железные петли на шеи моих двенадцати сыновей), and put the wooden one on his own neck (и надел деревянную петлю на свою собственную шею). But does that hare come here still (но прибегает: «приходит» ли сюда по-прежнему тот самый заяц) to spoil your table (чтобы портить = пачкать твой стол)?"
"He does indeed (да, конечно)," said the Gruagach.
After what he had seen and heard, the cowboy said, "I know now why you don't laugh, and small blame to you. But does that hare come here still to spoil your table?"
"He does indeed," said the Gruagach.
Both went to the table to play (вдвоем они сели к столу, чтобы сыграть /в карты/: «оба пошли к столу чтобы поиграть»), and they were not long playing cards (и недолго они играли в карты) when the hare ran in (когда вовнутрь вбежал заяц); and before they could stop him (и прежде, чем они смогли остановить его) he was on the table (он оказался на столе), and had put it in such a state (и привел его в такое состояние; to put — класть, положить; приводить в определенное состояние или положение) that they could not play on it longer (что они не смогли бы играть на нем больше: «дольше») if they had wanted to (/даже/ если бы захотели).
Both went to the table to play, and they were not long playing cards when the hare ran in; and before they could stop him he was on the table, and had put it in such a state that they could not play on it longer if they had wanted to.
