The Shee an Gannon made no answer (Эльф Ганнона ничего не ответил; to make an answer — ответить: «сделать ответ»), but left the king and pushed away to know (а покинул короля и двинулся прочь, чтобы понять; to leave /left/; to push — толкать, пихать; проталкиваться, продвигаться; to know — знать; узнавать) could he find why the Gruagach was silent (сможет ли он выяснить, почему замолчал Груагах: «почему Груагах был безмолвным»; to find — находить, отыскивать; узнавать, выяснять).
The Shee an Gannon made no answer, but left the king and pushed away to know could he find why the Gruagach was silent.
He took a glen at a step (он одним шагом преодолевал узкие долины: «брал долину одним шагом»; to take /took, taken/ — брать; преодолевать /препятствие и т.п./), a hill at a leap (а холмы: «холм» одним прыжком), and travelled all day till evening (и продолжал идти весь день до /самого/ вечера; to travel — путешествовать; двигаться, передвигаться). Then he came to a house (тогда он пришел к какому-то дому). The master of the house asked him (хозяин дома спросил его; master — хозяин, владелец, господин; the master of the house — глава семьи, хозяин дома) what sort was he (что он за человек; sort — вид, род, сорт; тип человека), and he said (и он сказал = ответил), "A young man looking for hire (/просто/ молодой человек, ищущий наемной работы; to look — смотреть, глядеть; to look for smth. — искать что-л.; подыскивать, присматривать; hire — наем; to hire — нанимать)."
He took a glen at a step, a hill at a leap, and travelled all day till evening. Then he came to a house. The master of the house asked him what sort was he, and he said, "A young man looking for hire."
"Well (что ж)," said the master of the house (сказал хозяин дома), "I was going tomorrow to look for a man to mind my cows (я собирался завтра искать человека, который присмотрел бы за моими коровами; to mind — заботиться /о ком-л., чем-л./, смотреть, присматривать /за чем-л., кем-л./). If you'll work for me (если ты будешь работать на меня: «для меня»), you'll have a good place (у тебя будет хорошее место = жилье), the best food a man could have to eat in this world (лучшая еда, которую может получить человек: «человек может получать поесть в этом мире»), and a soft bed to lie on (и мягкая постель для отдыха: «на которой лежать»)."
"Well," said the master of the house, "I was going tomorrow to look for a man to mind my cows. If you'll work for me, you'll have a good place, the best food a man could have to eat in this world, and a soft bed to lie on."
The Shee an Gannon took service (Эльф Ганнона взялся за эту работу; to take /took, taken/ — брать, взять; service — услужение; to take service /with smb./ — поступать /к кому-л./ в прислугу), and ate his supper (и съел свой ужин; to eat /ate, eaten/). Then the master of the house said (тогда хозяин дома сказал), "I am the Gruagach Gaire (я — Смеющийся Груагах); now that you are my man (теперь, когда ты мой слуга; man — мужчина, человек; слуга) and have eaten your supper (и /уже/ съел свой ужин), you'll have a bed of silk to sleep on (ты получишь шелковую постель для отдыха: «будешь иметь постель из шелка, чтобы спать на /ней/»)."
The Shee an Gannon took service, and ate his supper. Then the master of the house said, "I am the Gruagach Gaire; now that you are my man and have eaten your supper, you'll have a bed of silk to sleep on."
Next morning after breakfast the Gruagach said to the Shee an Gannon (на следующее утро после завтрака Груагах сказал Эльфу Ганнона), "Go out now and loosen my five golden cows (а теперь иди на /двор/ и отвяжи пять моих золотых коров; to loosen — ослаблять; развязывать) and my bull without horns (и моего быка без рогов), and drive them to pasture (и отгони их на пастбище); but when you have them out on the grass (но когда ты приведешь их на выгон: «когда ты будешь иметь их на пастбище»; grass — пастбище, выгон; out at grass — на пастбище), be careful you don't let them go near the land of the giant (будь осторожен = смотри, не позволяй им приближаться: «подходить близко» к владениям великана; careful — заботливый, внимательный; осторожный, осмотрительный; to be careful to do smth. — не преминуть, не позабыть сделать что-л.; land — земля, суша; землевладение, земельная собственность)."
Next morning after breakfast the Gruagach said to the Shee an Gannon, "Go out now and loosen my five golden cows and my bull without horns, and drive them to pasture; but when you have them out on the grass, be careful you don't let them go near the land of the giant."
