Before going (перед уходом), the princess left a letter (принцесса оставила письмо; to leave /left/ — оставлять; letter — буква; письмо, послание) with his servant (с его слугой) for the queen's husband (для мужа королевы), in which she told (в котором она рассказала) how she had followed him to Tir na n-Og (как она последовала за ним в Страну Юности), and had given the scissors, the comb, and the whistle (и отдала ножницы, гребень и свисток; to give /gave, given/), to pass three nights in his company (чтобы провести три ночи с ним: «в его обществе»; to pass — идти, проходить; проводить /время, день и т.п./), but had not spoken to him (но не поговорила с ним; to speak /spoke, spoken/) because the queen had given him sleeping draughts (потому что королева давала ему снотворное; sleeping — спящий; sleeping draught — снотворное, сонное зелье); that the life of the queen was in an egg (и что жизнь королевы была в яйце), the egg in a duck (яйцо в утке), the duck in a wether (утка в валухе), the wether in a holly-tree in front of the castle (валух в падубе перед замком), and that no man could split the tree but himself (и что никто: «никакой человек» не смог бы расколоть то дерево, кроме него самого).

Before going, the princess left a letter with his servant for the queen's husband, in which she told how she had followed him to Tir na n-Og, and had given the scissors, the comb, and the whistle, to pass three nights in his company, but had not spoken to him because the queen had given him sleeping draughts; that the life of the queen was in an egg, the egg in a duck, the duck in a wether, the wether in a holly-tree in front of the castle, and that no man could split the tree but himself.

As soon as he got the letter (как только он получил письмо; to get /got/) the husband took an axe (муж взял топор; to take /took, taken/), and went to the holly-tree (и пошел к падубу). When he came to the tree (когда он подошел к дереву) he found the princess there before him (он застал там принцессу: «обнаружил там принцессу перед собой»; to find /found/ — находить, отыскивать; застать, найти /где-л., за каким-л. занятием/), having the two boxes with the fox and the hawk in them (/у которой с собой/ были две коробки, с лисицей и ястребом в них).

As soon as he got the letter the husband took an axe, and went to the holly-tree. When he came to the tree he found the princess there before him, having the two boxes with the fox and the hawk in them.

He struck the tree a few blows (он нанес /по/ дереву несколько ударов; to strike /struck, stricken/ — ударять, бить; blow — удар; few — немного, мало; a few — несколько); it split open (оно раскололось; to split /split/ — расщеплять/ся/, раскалывать/ся/; open — открытый, раскрытый; to split open — взломать /сейф и т.п./), and out sprang the wether (и наружу выскочил валух; to spring /sprang, sprung/ — скакать, прыгать). He ran scarce twenty perches (едва он пробежал метров сто: «двадцать перчей»; to run /ran, run/; perch — насест, жердочка; перч, мера длины ок. 5 метров) before the fox caught him (прежде чем = как лисица схватила его; to catch /caught/). The fox tore him open (лисица разорвала его /на куски/; to tear /tore, torn/ — разрывать, рвать; open — открытый, раскрытый; to tear open — вскрыть); then the duck flew out (тогда /из него/ вылетела утка; to fly /flew, flown/ — лететь). The duck had not flown fifteen perches (утка не пролетела и семидесяти пяти метров: «пятнадцати перчей») when the hawk caught and killed her (как ястреб схватил и убил ее), smashing the egg (разбив яйцо). That instant the Queen of Tir na n-Og died (в то же мгновение королева Страны Юности умерла).

He struck the tree a few blows; it split open, and out sprang the wether. He ran scarce twenty perches before the fox caught him. The fox tore him open; then the duck flew out. The duck had not flown fifteen perches when the hawk caught and killed her, smashing the egg. That instant the Queen of Tir na n-Og died.

The husband kissed and embraced his faithful wife (муж поцеловал и обнял свою верную жену; faith — вера, доверие; верность, преданность; faithful — верный, преданный). He gave a great feast (он устроил роскошный пир; to give /gave, given/ — давать; устраивать /обед, вечер и т.п./; great — большой, огромный; пышный, внушительный); and when the feast was over (а когда пир закончился; over — наверху, поверх; указывает на окончание чего-л.), he burned the henwife with her house (он сжег птичницу с ее домом), built a palace for the washerwoman (построил дворец для прачки; to build /built/), and made his servant secretary (и сделал своего слугу секретарем; to make /made/ — делать; назначать /на должность/, производить /в чин/). They never left Tir na n-Og (они так никогда и не уехали из Страны Юности; to leave /left/ — оставлять, покидать), and are living there happily now (и сейчас живут там счастливо); and so may we live here (чтобы и мы так жили здесь; may — могу, может, можем и т.д.; выражает пожелания).

The husband kissed and embraced his faithful wife. He gave a great feast; and when the feast was over, he burned the henwife with her house, built a palace for the washerwoman, and made his servant secretary. They never left Tir na n-Og, and are living there happily now; and so may we live here.
