One day, when Trembling was well (однажды, когда Трепещущая чувствовала себя хорошо: «была здоровой»), and when her husband was away hunting (и когда ее муж уехал на охоту: «был прочь охотясь»), the two sisters went out to walk (две сестры вышли на прогулку: «чтобы прогуляться»); and when they came to the seaside (и когда они пришли к берегу моря), the eldest pushed the youngest sister in (старшая сестра столкнула младшую сестру в /море/). A great whale came and swallowed her (приплыл огромный кит и проглотил ее).
One day, when Trembling was well, and when her husband was away hunting, the two sisters went out to walk; and when they came to the seaside, the eldest pushed the youngest sister in. A great whale came and swallowed her.
The eldest sister came home alone (старшая сестра вернулась: «пришла» домой одна), and the husband asked (и муж спросил), "Where is your sister (где твоя сестра)?"
"She has gone home to her father in Ballyshannon (она уехала домой, к своему отцу, в Баллишаннон); now that I am well (теперь, когда я чувствую себя хорошо: «здоровой»), I don't need her (я /больше/ не нуждаюсь в ней)."
The eldest sister came home alone, and the husband asked, "Where is your sister?"
"She has gone home to her father in Ballyshannon; now that I am well, I don't need her."
"Well (ну)," said the husband, looking at her (сказал муж, глядя на нее), "I'm in dread it's my wife that has gone (боюсь, что ушла-то именно моя жена: «я в страхе, что это моя жена, которая ушла»)."
"Oh! no (нет)," said she; "it's my sister Fair that's gone (ушла моя сестра Белокурая: «это моя сестра Белокурая, которая ушла»)."
"Well," said the husband, looking at her, "I'm in dread it's my wife that has gone."
"Oh! no," said she; "it's my sister Fair that's gone."
Since the sisters were very much alike (поскольку сестры были очень похожи), the prince was in doubt (принц сомневался: «был в сомнении»). That night he put his sword between them (той ночью он положил свой меч между собой и своей женой: «между ними»), and said (и сказал), "If you are my wife (если ты моя жена), this sword will get warm (меч нагреется: «этот меч станет теплым»; to get — получать; становиться); if not (а если нет), it will stay cold (он останется холодным; to stay — оставаться, не уходить; пребывать, оставаться /в каком-л. состоянии или положении/)."
In the morning when he rose up (утром, когда он встал; to rise /rose, risen/ — вставать, подниматься), the sword was as cold as when he put it there (меч был таким же холодным, как когда он положил его туда).
Since the sisters were very much alike, the prince was in doubt. That night he put his sword between them, and said, "If you are my wife, this sword will get warm; if not, it will stay cold."
In the morning when he rose up, the sword was as cold as when he put it there.
It happened when the two sisters were walking by the seashore (случилось /так, что/ когда две сестры прогуливались вдоль берега моря; to happen — случаться, происходить; оказываться /случайно/), that a little cowboy was down by the water (маленький пастух был внизу у воды: cow — корова; boy — мальчик; парень; cowboy — пастух) minding cattle (присматривая за скотом; to mind — возражать, быть против; заботиться /о ком-л., чем-л./, смотреть, присматривать /за чем-л., кем-л./), and saw Fair push Trembling into the sea (и видел, как Белокурая столкнула Трепещущую в море); and next day, when the tide came in (и на следующий день, когда начался прилив), he saw (он увидел) the whale swim up and throw her out on the sand (как кит всплыл и выбросил ее на песок).
It happened when the two sisters were walking by the seashore, that a little cowboy was down by the water minding cattle, and saw Fair push Trembling into the sea; and next day, when the tide came in, he saw the whale swim up and throw her out on the sand.
When she was on the sand (когда она оказалась на песке) she said to the cowboy (она сказала пастуху), "When you go home in the evening with the cows (когда ты пойдешь домой вечером с коровами), tell the master (скажи /своему/ хозяину) that my sister Fair pushed me into the sea yesterday (что моя сестра Белокурая столкнула меня в море вчера); that a whale swallowed me (что меня проглотил кит), and then threw me out (а затем выбросил меня /на берег/; to throw /threw, thrown/), but will come again and swallow me with the coming of the next tide (но приплывет: «прибудет» снова и проглотит меня с наступлением следующего прилива); then he'll go out with the tide (затем он уплывет: «уйдет» /в море/ с отливом), and come again with tomorrow's tide (и вернется: «придет снова» с завтрашним приливом), and throw me again on the strand (и выбросит меня снова на берег).
When she was on the sand she said to the cowboy, "When you go home in the evening with the cows, tell the master that my sister Fair pushed me into the sea yesterday; that a whale swallowed me, and then threw me out, but will come again and swallow me with the coming of the next tide; then he'll go out with the tide, and come again with tomorrow's tide, and throw me again on the strand.
