They were that way waiting (таким образом они ждали; way — путь, дорога; образ действия, метод, способ), and scolding the younger sister (и бранили младшую сестру), till the princes were near the place (пока принцы не оказались вблизи того места). The day they were to come (в тот день, когда они должны были прийти), the sisters put Trembling in a closet (сестры затолкали Трепещущую в чулан: «сестры поместили Трепещущую в стенной шкаф»), and locked the door on her (и заперли за ней дверь; lock — замок, запор, затвор; to lock — запирать на замок). When the company came to the house (когда компания /молодых принцев/ подъехала к дому), the prince of Omanya gave the shoe to the sisters (принц Омании дал туфельку сестрам). But though they tried and tried (и хотя они все пытались и пытались /натянуть ее/), it would fit neither of them (она не пришлась впору ни одной из них).

When the company came to the house, the prince of Omanya gave the shoe to the sisters. But though they tried and tried, it would fit neither of them.
"Is there any other young woman in the house (а есть ли в доме еще какая-нибудь молодая женщина)?" asked the prince (спросил принц).
"There is (есть)," said Trembling, speaking up in the closet (сказала Трепещущая, заговорив в чулане: «говоря в стенном шкафу»); "I'm here (я здесь)."
"Oh! we have her for nothing but to put out the ashes (она годится лишь на то, чтобы выносить пепел: «мы держим ее ни для чего другого, кроме как выносить пепел»)," said the sisters.
"Is there any other young woman in the house?" asked the prince.
"There is," said Trembling, speaking up in the closet; "I'm here."
"Oh! we have her for nothing but to put out the ashes," said the sisters.
But the prince and the others wouldn't leave the house (но принц и другие /молодые люди/ не хотели покидать дом /до тех пор,/) till they had seen her (пока они не повидали ее); so the two sisters had to open the door (так что двум сестрам пришлось открыть дверь; to have to do smth. — быть должным сделать что-л.). When Trembling came out (когда Трепещущая вышла /из чулана/), the shoe was given to her (ей дали туфельку: «туфелька была дана ей»), and it fitted exactly (и она пришлась точно впору).
But the prince and the others wouldn't leave the house till they had seen her; so the two sisters had to open the door. When Trembling came out, the shoe was given to her, and it fitted exactly.
The prince of Omanya looked at her and said (принц Омании взглянул на нее и сказал),
"You are the woman the shoe fits (ты та самая девушка, которой туфелька впору), and you are the woman (и ты та самая девушка) I took the shoe from (у которой я взял эту туфельку)."
Then Trembling spoke up, and said (тогда Трепещущая заговорила и сказала; to speak /spoke, spoken/), "Do you stay here till I return (оставайтесь-ка здесь, пока я /не/ вернусь)."
The prince of Omanya looked at her and said,
"You are the woman the shoe fits, and you are the woman I took the shoe from."
Then Trembling spoke up, and said, "Do you stay here till I return."
Then she went to the henwife's house (тогда она пошла в дом птичницы). The old woman put on the cloak of darkness (старуха накинула плащ-невидимку: «старая женщина надела плащ тьмы»), got everything for her (достала для нее все; to get /got/) she had the first Sunday at church (что у нее было в первое воскресенье в церкви), and put her on the white mare in the same fashion (и посадила ее на белую кобылку как и в первый раз: «таким же образом»). Then Trembling rode along the highway to the front of the house (затем Трепещущая подъехала верхом по главной дороге к дому; to ride /rode, ridden/; front — перед, передняя сторона; фасад, лицевая сторона). All who saw her the first time said (и все, кто видели ее и в первый раз, сказали), "This is the lady (это та самая дама) we saw at church (которую мы видели в церкви)."
Then she went to the henwife's house. The old woman put on the cloak of darkness, got everything for her she had the first Sunday at church, and put her on the white mare in the same fashion. Then Trembling rode along the highway to the front of the house. All who saw her the first time said, "This is the lady we saw at church."
Then she went away a second time (затем она ускакала: «уехала прочь» во второй раз), and a second time came back on the black mare (и во второй раз вернулась верхом на черной кобыле) in the second dress which the henwife gave her (во втором платье, которое птичница дала ей). All who saw her the second Sunday said (все, кто видели ее во второе воскресенье, сказали), "That is the lady we saw at church (это та самая дама, которую мы видели в церкви)."
Then she went away a second time, and a second time came back on the black mare in the second dress which the henwife gave her. All who saw her the second Sunday said, "That is the lady we saw at church."
