Jack London «Nam-Bok the Unveracious» (5/20)

Джек Лондон «Нам-Бок — лжец»

Nam-Bok made to come to her (Нам-Бок попытался подойти к ней; to make — пытаться /что-либо сделать/), but a growl of fear and menace warned him back (но гул страха и угрозы предостерег его /и он шагнул/ назад). He said something in a strange tongue (он сказал что-то на незнакомом языке) which sounded like "Goddam (что прозвучало наподобие «черт побери»; goddam — проклятие = god damn — да проклянет Бог)," and added (и добавил), "No shadow am I, but a man (я никакой призрак, а человек)."

"Who may know concerning the things of mystery (кто может знать о таинственных сущностях; concerning — касательно, относительно; mystery — тайна, таинство)?" Opee-Kwan demanded (спросил Опи-Кван), half of himself and half of his tribespeople (наполовину от себя и наполовину от своих одноплеменников; tribe — племя). "We are, and in a breath we are not (мы есть, а через вздох нас нет). If the man may become shadow (если человек может стать призраком), may not the shadow become man (разве не может призрак стать человеком)? Nam-Bok was, but is not (Нам-Бок был, но его нет). This we know (это мы знаем), but we do not know (но мы не знаем) if this be Nam-Bok or the shadow of Nam-Bok (это = ты Нам-Бок или призрак Нам-Бока)."

Nam-Bok made to come to her, but a growl of fear and menace warned him back. He said something in a strange tongue which sounded like "Goddam," and added, "No shadow am I, but a man."

"Who may know concerning the things of mystery?" Opee-Kwan demanded, half of himself and half of his tribespeople. "We are, and in a breath we are not. If the man may become shadow, may not the shadow become man? Nam-Bok was, but is not. This we know, but we do not know if this be Nam-Bok or the shadow of Nam-Bok."

Nam-Bok cleared his throat and made answer (Нам-Бок прочистил горло = прокашлялся и дал ответ). "In the old time long ago (в давние времена), thy father's father, Opee-Kwan (отец твоего отца, Опи-Кван), went away and came back on the heels of the years (ушел и вернулся по прошествии лет). Nor was a place by the fire denied him (ему тоже не отказали в месте у костра). It is said (говорят) ..." He paused significantly (он сделал значительную паузу), and they hung on his utterance (и они ждали его слов; to hang on — ждать; жадно ловить; utterance — выражение в словах, произнесение; высказывание; to utter — издавать звук; произносить). "It is said (говорят)," he repeated (повторил он), driving his point home with deliberation (неторопливо доводя до сведения свою важную мысль; point — точка; важная мысль, заслуживающее внимание замечание; to drive home — довести до сведения; убеждать, внедрять в сознание; deliberation — размышление; неторопливость, неспешность), "that Sipsip, his klooch, bore him two sons after he came back (что Сипсип, его клуч /жена/, родила ему двух сыновей после его возвращения: «после того как он вернулся»; klooch = klootch — от слова языка чинук со значением «жена»)."

"But he had no doings with the off-shore wind (но он не имел никаких дел с ветром с берега)," Opee-Kwan retorted (возразил Опи-Кван). "He went away into the heart of the land (он ушел в глубинные районы /суши/; the heart of the country — глубинные районы, центр страны; удаленные от центра районы страны, глушь), and it is in the nature of things that a man may go on and on into the land (а это заключено в природе вещей, что человек может уходить дальше и дальше в глубь суши; in the nature of things — в природе вещей; естественно, неизбежно)."

Nam-Bok cleared his throat and made answer. "In the old time long ago, thy father's father, Opee-Kwan, went away and came back on the heels of the years. Nor was a place by the fire denied him. It is said ..." He paused significantly, and they hung on his utterance. "But he had no doings with the off-shore wind," Opee-Kwan retorted. "He went away into the heart of the land, and it is in the nature of things that a man may go on and on into the land."

"And likewise the sea (а также в море). But that is neither here nor there (но это не имеет значения; neither here nor there — не влиять, не иметь значения). It is said that thy father's father told strange tales of the things he saw (говорят, что отец твоего отца рассказывал необыкновенные истории о том, что он видел)."

"Ay, strange tales he told (да, он рассказывал необычные истории)."

"I, too, have strange tales to tell (у меня тоже есть необыкновенные истории, /которые я хочу/ рассказать)," Nam-Bok stated insidiously (заявил коварно Нам-Бок; insidious — хитрый, коварный). And, as they wavered (а когда они заколебались в нерешительности), "And presents likewise (а также подарки)."

He pulled from the bidarka a shawl (он вытащил из байдарки шаль), marvellous of texture and color (изумительной ткани и цвета), and flung it about his mother's shoulders (и набросил ее на плечи матери; to fling). The women voiced a collective sigh of admiration (женщины издали общий вздох восхищения; to voice — произносить, говорить), and old Bask-Wah-Wan ruffled the gay material and patted it and crooned in childish joy (а старая Баск-Уа-Уан собрала в сборки яркий материал, пошлепывала = поглаживала его и напевала вполголоса в ребяческой радости; to pat — шлепать, похлопывать; to croon — напевать вполголоса).
