"Your cap, sir?"

"But — sir — I'm very sorry," said Gluck hesitatingly; "but — really, sir — you're putting the fire out."

"It'll take longer to do the mutton then," replied his visitor dryly.

Gluck was very much puzzled by the behavior of his guest (Глюк был немало удивлен: «очень сильно озадачен» поведением своего гостя); it was such a strange mixture of coolness and humility (в нем странным образом сочетались дерзость и смирение/скромность: «это была странная смесь…»; cool — прохладный; невозмутимый; дерзкий, нахальный). He turned away at the string meditatively for another five minutes (Глюк еще пять минут продолжал задумчиво вращать веревку, /на которой было подвешено мясо/).

"That mutton looks very nice (баранина выглядит очень аппетитно; nice — хороший, приятный; хорошо сделанный; вкусный)," said the old gentleman at length (наконец). "Can't you give me a little bit (не мог бы ты дать мне маленький кусочек)?"

"Impossible, sir (/это/ невозможно, сэр)," said Gluck.

Gluck was very much puzzled by the behavior of his guest; it was such a strange mixture of coolness and humility. He turned away at the string meditatively for another five minutes.

"That mutton looks very nice," said the old gentleman at length. "Can't you give me a little bit?"

"Impossible, sir," said Gluck.

He spoke in so very melancholy a tone (он говорил таким печальным тоном) that it quite melted Gluck's heart (что совсем разжалобил сердце Глюка: «он /тон/ совсем растопил сердце Глюка»). "They promised me one slice to-day, sir (они пообещали мне сегодня один ломтик, сэр)," said he; "I can give you that, but not a bit more (я могу дать его вам, но ни кусочка больше)."

"That's a good boy (вот хороший мальчик)," said the old gentleman again (снова).

"I'm very hungry," continued the old gentleman; "I've had nothing to eat yesterday nor to-day. They surely couldn't miss a bit from the knuckle!"

He spoke in so very melancholy a tone that it quite melted Gluck's heart. "They promised me one slice to-day, sir," said he; "I can give you that, but not a bit more."

Then Gluck warmed a plate and sharpened a knife (тогда Глюк нагрел тарелку и заточил нож). Gluck fitted the slice into the mutton again (Глюк приладил/приложил ломоть обратно к куску баранины), with desperate efforts at exactitude (отчаянно стараясь сделать так, чтобы ничего не было заметно: «с отчаянным стремлением к точности/аккуратности»; effort — усилие, напряжение; попытка; exact — точный; точно соответствующий), and ran to open the door (и побежал открывать дверь; to run).
