О. Генри "Как скрывался Черный Билл"

" 'Where's the boss of this ranch (где хозяин этого ранчо)?' the captain of the gang asks me (капитан этой банды спрашивает меня; gang — набор, комплект; партия, бригада; банда, шайка).

" 'Wait just a minute, cap'n (минуточку: «подождите только минуту», капитан; cap'n = captain),' says I. 'Wasn't there a kind of a reward (а не было ли чего-то вроде вознаграждения) offered for the capture of this desperate character (обещано за поимку этого сорвиголовы; to offer — предлагать; desperate безнадeжный; отчаянный, безрассудный) you have referred to in your preamble (которого вы упоминали в своем вступлении; to refer — ссылаться)?'

" 'There's a thousand dollars reward offered (назначена награда в тысячу долларов),' says the captain, 'but it's for his capture and conviction (но это за его поимку и изобличение; conviction — осуждение, признание виновным). There don't seem to be no provision made for an informer (а насчет награды осведомителю там, кажется, ничего не сказано; provision — обеспечение, предоставление; положение, условие; to make provision — предусмотреть, позаботиться).'

" 'It looks like it might rain in a day or so (похоже, дождик может пойти через день-другой),' says I, in a tired way, looking up at the cerulean blue sky (говорю я томно, глядя на лазурное небо; tired — усталый, утомленный; потерявший интерес; way — путь, дорога; манера; cerulean — небесно-голубого цвета; лазурный).

" 'If you know anything about the locality (если ты знаешь что-нибудь о местоположении), disposition (пребывании; disposition — расположение, диспозиция; дислокация), or secretiveness of this here Black Bill (или о том, как скрывается этот Черный Билл; to secrete — прятать, скрывать; secretiveness — существительное от этого глагола /авторский неологизм/),' says he, in a severe dialect (говорит он на строгом /полицейском/ жаргоне; dialect — диалект, наречие; говор), 'you are amiable to the law in not reporting it (ты несешь ответственность перед законом за то, что не сообщил об этом; amiable — дружелюбный, дружественный; любезный; милый).'

" 'I heard a fence-rider say (я слышал, как один прохожий говорил; fence — забор, изгородь, ограждение; rider — всадник, наездник; то, что лежит поверх другого предмета; fence-rider — человек, беседующий, повиснув на заборе),' says I, in a desultory kind of voice (говорю я, как бы постепенно вспоминая; desultory — бессвязный; бесцельный; voice — голос), 'that a Mexican told a cowboy named Jake (что один мексиканец сказал ковбою по имени Джейк) over at Pidgin's store on the Nueces (в магазинчике Пиджина, что на реке Нуэсес) that he heard that Black Bill had been seen in Matamoras (что он слышал, что Черного Билла видел в Матаморасе) by a sheepman's cousin two weeks ago (двоюродный брат одного овцевода две недели назад).'

" 'Tell you what I'll do, Tight Mouth (/я/ скажу тебе, что я сделаю, мистер Молчун; tight — тугой, туго завязанный скрытный, сдержанный; mouth — рот),' says the captain, after looking me over for bargains (говорит капитан, оглядев меня, прицениваясь; bargain — соглашение, договоренность; bargains — товары, продаваемые по сниженным ценам).

'If you put us on so we can scoop Black Bill (если ты проинформируешь нас и мы сможем схватить Черного Билла; to put on = to put on a trail — наведешь на след), I'll pay you a hundred dollars out of my own (я заплачу тебе сто долларов из своего собственного) — out of our ownpockets (из наших собственных карманов). That's liberal (это щедро; liberal — свободомыслящий; обильный, щедрый),' says he. 'You ain't entitled to anything (тебе ничего не положено; to entitle — озаглавливать, давать название; давать право). Now, what do you say (ну, что ты скажешь)?'

" 'Cash down now?' I asks (деньги на бочку? — спрашиваю я; cash — наличные деньги; cash down — за наличный расчет).

"The captain has a sort of discussion with his helpmates (капитан устраивает нечто вроде совещания со своими помощниками), and they all produce the contents of their pockets for analysis (и они выворачивают содержимое своих карманов для анализа; to produce — представлять, предъявлять). Out of the general results (в общем итоге) they figured up $102.30 in cash (они насчитали 102 доллара 30 центов наличными) and $31 worth of plug tobacco (и на тридцать один доллар жевательного табака; plug tobacco — прессованный табак).
