"Play it, of course (поиграй, конечно)," says I. "Mr. Bill will play with you (мистер Билл поиграет с тобой). What kind of a game is it (а что это за игра; kind — вид, разновидность)?"
"I'm the Black Scout (я Черный Cкаут)," says Red Chief, "and I have to ride to the stockade to warn the settlers that the Indians are coming (и я должен доскакать до форта, чтобы предупредить поселенцев, что приближаются индейцы; stockade — забор, ограждение; укрепление, форт). I'm tired of playing Indian myself (мне надоело самому быть индейцем: «я устал играть в индейца сам»). I want to be the Black Scout (я хочу быть Черным Скаутом)."

[1] Обычная фраза — safe and sound «целый и невредимый». Здесь же можно трактовать и таким образом, что мальчик будет возвращен невредимым и well within three hours — «гораздо раньше, чем пройдут три часа».
