These orifices so impressed the engineer with their possibilities (эти отверстия так впечатлили машиниста своими возможностями) that he raised both hands in a gesture such as accompanies the ejaculation "Do tell (что он поднял обе руки в жесте подобном тому, что сопровождает восклицание «Да что вы говорите»)!"

Shark Dodson and Bob Tidball (Акула Додсон и Боб Тидболл), scorning to put such low-grade ore as the passengers through the mill (брезгуя пропускать через свою обогатительную фабрику такую бедную руду, как пассажиры; to scorn — презирать; отвергать, считать неприемлемым; low-grade — с низким содержанием, бедный: «низкой ступени/низкого разряда»; mill — фабрика; металлургический завод, комбинат), struck out for the rich pocket of the express car (устремились к богатой жиле почтового вагона; to strike out for smth. — направляться к чему-либо; pocket — /геол./ гнездо, карман). They found the messenger serene (они обнаружили сопровождающего в полном спокойствии; messenger — посыльный, курьер; serene — безмятежный, спокойный) in the belief that the "Sunset Express" was taking on nothing more stimulating and dangerous than aqua pura (полагающего, что «Экспресс заходящего солнца» принимает сейчас на борт чистую воду и ничего более стимулирующего и опасного; belief — вера; in the belief that… — с надеждой на то, что...; считающий, что…; aqua — /лат./ вода; purus — /лат./ чистый, беспримесный). Shark Dodson and Bob Tidball, scorning to put such low-grade ore as the passengers through the mill, struck out for the rich pocket of the express car. They found the messenger serene in the belief that the "Sunset Express" was taking on nothing more stimulating and dangerous than aqua pura. While Bob was knocking this idea out of his head with the butt-end of his six-shooter Shark Dodson was already dosing the express-car safe with dynamite.
