THERE was once a king of a province in Erin (/жил/-был однажды король одной провинции в Ирландии) who had an only son (у которого был один-единственный сын). When the young man came home with this word to his father and mother (когда молодой человек вернулся: «приехал» домой с этим известием к отцу и матери), they were grieved (они опечалились) when they heard it (когда они услышали это). But the king's son said (а королевский сын сказал) that he would go out into the world to seek his fortune (что он отправится по белу свету искать свое счастье: «пойдет в мир…»), and settle the trouble in that way (и тем самым: «таким образом» уладит неприятности; to settle — поселять; располагать; решать, принимать решение; разрешать, улаживать, урегулировать; trouble — беспокойство, волнение, тревога; неприятность, беда, напасть; way — путь, дорога; метод, способ, образ действия). When the young man came home with this word to his father and mother, they were grieved when they heard it. But the king's son said that he would go out into the world to seek his fortune, and settle the trouble in that way. So away he went, taking with him only five pounds in money for his support.
The young man travelled on (молодой человек все шел и шел: «продолжал двигаться»; to travel — путешествовать; двигаться, перемещаться, передвигаться) till he came to a grave-yard (пока он /не/ подошел к кладбищу; grave — могила; yard — двор; grave-yard — кладбище), where he saw (где он увидел) four men fighting over a coffin (как четверо мужчин дерутся над гробом; to fight — вести боевые действия, сражаться; драться). Then he went up to the four, and saw (затем он приблизился к этим четверым и увидел; up — наверх, наверху; означает приближение) that two of them were trying to put the coffin down into a grave (что двое из них пытаются опустить гроб в могилу), and the other two preventing them (а двое других мешают им; to prevent — предотвращать; мешать, препятствовать, не допускать) and keeping the coffin above ground (и удерживают гроб над землей).
The young man travelled on till he came to a grave-yard, where he saw four men fighting over a coffin. Then he went up to the four, and saw that two of them were trying to put the coffin down into a grave, and the other two preventing them and keeping the coffin above ground.
