When the king's son came near the men (когда королевский сын подошел поближе к этим людям), he asked (он спросил), "Why do you fight in such a place as this (почему вы деретесь в таком месте, как это), and why do you keep the coffin above ground (и почему вы держите гроб над землей)?"
Two of the men answered, and said (двое мужчин ответили и сказали), "The body of our brother is in this coffin (в этом гробу находится тело нашего брата), and these two men won't let us bury it (а эти двое мужчин не позволяют = не дают нам похоронить его)."
When the king's son came near the men, he asked, "Why do you fight in such a place as this, and why do you keep the coffin above ground?"
Two of the men answered, and said, "The body of our brother is in this coffin, and these two men won't let us bury it."
The other two then said (тогда двое других сказали), "We have a debt of five pounds on the dead man (мертвец нам остался должен пять фунтов: «у нас есть долг в пять фунтов на мертвом человеке»), and we won't let his body be buried (и мы не позволим, чтобы его тело было похоронено) till the debt is paid (пока долг не будет уплачен; to pay /paid/)."
The king's son said (королевский сын сказал), "Do you let these men bury their brother (вы позволите этим людям похоронить их брата), and I will pay what you ask (а я заплачу вам /столько/, сколько вы требуете; to ask — спрашивать; требовать)."
The other two then said, "We have a debt of five pounds on the dead man, and we won't let his body be buried till the debt is paid."
The king's son said, "Do you let these men bury their brother, and I will pay what you ask."
Then the two let the brothers of the dead man bury him (тогда эти двое позволили братьям умершего: «мертвого человека» похоронить его). The king's son paid the five pounds (королевский сын заплатил пять фунтов), and went away empty-handed (и пошел /дальше/ с пустыми руками; empty — пустой; -handed — пользующийся /такой-то/ рукой; имеющий /такие-то/ руки; empty-handed — с пустыми руками, ни с чем), and, except the clothes on his back (и, кроме одежды, /которая была/ на нем: «на его спине»), he had no more than on the day (у него /с собой/ было не больше, чем в тот день) he was born (когда он родился).
Then the two let the brothers of the dead man bury him. The king's son paid the five pounds, and went away empty-handed, and, except the clothes on his back, he had no more than on the day he was born.
After he had gone on his way a while (после того, как он ушел своей дорогой, /и прошло/ некоторое время) and the grave-yard was out of sight (и кладбище скрылось из виду: «было вне поля зрения») he turned and saw a sprightly red-haired man [fear ruadh] (он обернулся и увидел бойкого рыжеволосого мужчину) hurrying after him (который спешил вслед за ним; after — после; за, вслед за). When he came up (когда он приблизился), the stranger asked (незнакомец спросил), "Don't you want a serving man (а вам не нужен слуга; to want — хотеть, желать; нуждаться /в ком-л./; to serve — служить, быть слугой; man — мужчина, человек; слуга)?"
After he had gone on his way a while and the grave-yard was out of sight he turned and saw a sprightly red-haired man [fear ruadh] hurrying after him. When he came up, the stranger asked, "Don't you want a serving man?"
"I do not (нет: «я не /нуждаюсь/»)," answered the king's son (ответил королевич), "I have nothing to support myself with (мне не на что себя самого-то содержать: «я /не/ имею ничего, на что содержать самого себя»; to support — поддерживать, подпирать; помогать, поддерживать /материально/, содержать /семью и т.п./), let alone a serving man (не говоря уже о слуге; to let alone — оставить в покое: «одним/одиноким»; let alone — не говоря о, не считая)."
"Well, never mind that (ну, об этом не беспокойтесь; never — никогда; /эмоц.-усил./ нисколько, никоим образом; to mind — возражать, быть против; заботиться /о ком-л., чем-л./; never mind — ничего, неважно, не беспокойтесь)," said the red-haired man (сказал рыжеволосый мужчина); "I'll be with you wherever you go (я буду = останусь с вами, куда бы вы ни пошли), whether you have anything or not (/независимо от того,/ есть ли у вас что-нибудь или нет /ничего/)."
"I do not," answered the king's son, "I have nothing to support myself with, let alone a serving man."
"Well, never mind that," said the red-haired man; "I'll be with you wherever you go, whether you have anything or not."
