The giant stopped a moment, and said (великан приумолк на мгновение и сказал; to stop — останавливать; останавливаться, замолчать, делать паузу, перерыв), "I believe you'd do that (я полагаю, что ты это сделал бы) if it served you (если бы тебе это было нужно; to serve — служить, быть слугой; быть полезным, оказывать помощь, служить /для чего-л./)." So he took the sword off his belt (так что он снял меч со своего пояса) and handed it to his guest (и вручил его своему гостю; hand — рука, кисть руки; to hand — давать, передавать, вручать). Shaking-head gave it to the king's son (Качающаяся голова отдал его королевскому сыну), who mounted his steed (который вскочил на своего коня; to mount — взбираться, восходить, подниматься; садиться /на лошадь, в седло и т.п./), and they both went away (и они оба удалились: «ушли прочь»).

When they had gone some distance from the giant's castle (когда они удалились на некоторое расстояние от замка великана) Shaking-head said to the king's son (Качающаяся голова сказал королевскому сыну), "Where shall we be tonight (где мы будем сегодня вечером)? — you have more knowledge than I (вы знаете лучше меня: «вы имеете больше представления, чем я»; knowledge — знания, познания; осведомленность, сведения)."
"Indeed then I have not (я вот этого, в самом-то деле, я не /знаю/: «конечно же, тогда я не имею /больше представления/»)," said the king's son; "I have no knowledge at all of where we are going (я вообще не представляю, куда мы идем: «я /не/ имею никакого представления вообще…»); it is you who have the knowledge (а вот ты все знаешь: «это ты, кто имеет представление»)."
When they had gone some distance from the giant's castle Shaking-head said to the king's son, "Where shall we be tonight? — you have more knowledge than I."
"Indeed then I have not," said the king's son; "I have no knowledge at all of where we are going; it is you who have the knowledge."
"Well (что ж)," said Shaking-head, "we'll be at the third and youngest giant's castle tonight (сегодня вечером мы будем в замке третьего, самого молодого = младшего великана), and at first he'll treat us far worse (и поначалу он обойдется с нами гораздо хуже) and more harshly (и /даже/ более грубо; harsh — жесткий, грубый, неприятный /на ощупь/; шершавый; резкий /о человеке/), but still we'll take this night's lodging of him (но все же мы от него получим ночлег на эту ночь: «мы возьмем этой ночи жилье от него»; lodging — /временное/ жилье, помещение), and a good gift in the morning (и хороший подарок поутру)."
"Well," said Shaking-head, "we'll be at the third and youngest giant's castle tonight, and at first he'll treat us far worse and more harshly, but still we'll take this night's lodging of him, and a good gift in the morning."
Soon after sunset they came to the castle (вскоре после заката они подошли к замку) where they met the worst reception (где они встретили самый худший прием; to meet /met/ — встречать; испытать /что-л./, подвергнуться /чему-л./; reception — прием, принятие, получение; встреча, прием) and the harshest they had found on the road (и самый грубый /прием из всех/, которые они встречали: «обнаруживали» по дороге). The giant was going to eat them both for supper (великан собирался съесть их обоих на ужин); but when Shaking-head told him of the champions of Erin (но когда Качающая голова рассказал ему об отважных воинах Ирландии), he became as kind as his two brothers (он стал таким же добрым, как и двое его братьев), and gave good entertainment to both (и доброжелательно встретил их обоих; entertainment — прием гостей, званый вечер; обслуживание, гостеприимство; to give an entertainment — устраивать прием, банкет).
