"It's not gold I want (мне не золото нужно: «это не золото, что я хочу»)," said Shaking-head, "but the cloak of darkness (а плащ-невидимка: «плащ тьмы»)."
"Oh," said the giant, "you'll not get that cloak of me (ты не получишь этот плащ от меня), for I want it myself (потому что он мне самому нужен; to want — хотеть, желать; нуждаться, испытывать потребность /в ком-л., чем-л./). If any man were to come against me (если бы кто-нибудь пошел против меня: «если любой человек должен был пойти против меня»), all I'd have to do (то все, что мне надо было бы сделать) would be to put that cloak on my shoulders (так это накинуть: «положить» тот плащ себе на плечи), and no one in the world could see me (и никто на свете: «в мире» не смог бы меня увидеть), or know where I'd be (и не знал бы, где я нахожусь)."

"Oh," said the giant, "you'll not get that cloak of me, for I want it myself. If any man were to come against me, all I'd have to do would be to put that cloak on my shoulders, and no one in the world could see me, or know where I'd be."
"Well," said Shaking-head, "it's long enough that I am keeping your enemies away (уже достаточно давно я удерживаю твоих врагов; to keep — держать; away — далеко; to keep away — держать в отдалении, не подпускать близко); and if you don't give me that cloak now (и если ты не отдашь мне этот плащ сейчас же) I'll raise all the kingdom of Erin and still more forces to destroy you (я подниму все королевство Ирландии и /соберу/ еще больше войск, чтобы уничтожить тебя; to raise — поднимать; /воен./ собирать, формировать), and it's not long you'll last (и ты не долго продержишься: «и это будет недолго, пока ты будешь оставаться в живых»; to last — продолжаться, длиться; выдерживать, оставаться в живых) after they come (после того как они придут)."
"Well," said Shaking-head, "it's long enough that I am keeping your enemies away; and if you don't give me that cloak now I'll raise all the kingdom of Erin and still more forces to destroy you, and it's not long you'll last after they come."
The giant thought a moment, and then said (великан задумался на мгновение и затем сказал; to think /thought/), "I believe you'd do what you say (я полагаю, что ты сделаешь то, что ты говоришь). There's the black cloak hanging on the wall before you (на стене перед тобой висит черный плащ); take it (возьми его)."

Shaking-head took the cloak (Качающаяся голова взял плащ), and the two went away together (и эти двое ушли прочь вместе), the king's son riding on the light black steed (королевский сын ехал верхом на бледно-вороном коне), and having the double-handed sword at his back (и за его спиной был двуручный меч: «имея двуручный меч у его спины»). When out of sight of the giant (когда они скрылись с глаз великана: «когда за пределами видимости великана»), Shaking-head put on the cloak (Качающаяся голова надел плащ), and wasn't to be seen (и стал невидимым: «и/его/ нельзя было увидеть»), and no other man could have been seen in his place (как и любой другой, /будь он/ на его месте: «и никакой другой человек не мог бы быть увиден…»).
Shaking-head took the cloak, and the two went away together, the king's son riding on the light black steed, and having the double-handed sword at his back. When out of sight of the giant, Shaking-head put on the cloak, and wasn't to be seen, and no other man could have been seen in his place.
Then the king's son looked around (тогда королевский сын стал оглядываться: «смотреть вокруг»), and began to call and search for his man (и начал звать и искать своего слугу; to begin /began, begun/), — he was lonely without him (он был одиноким = чувствовал себя одиноко без него) and grieved not to see him (и печалился, не видя его). Shaking-head, glad to see the affection of the king's son (Качающаяся голова обрадовался, увидев привязанность королевича), took off the cloak (снял плащ) and was at his side again (и снова оказался рядом с ним; side — сторона, бок; место рядом).
Then the king's son looked around, and began to call and search for his man, — he was lonely without him and grieved not to see him. Shaking-head, glad to see the affection of the king's son, took off the cloak and was at his side again.
