"Where are we going now (куда мы направляемся теперь)?" asked the king's son.
"We are going on a long journey to Ri Chuil an Or [King Behind the Gold] (мы направляемся в долгое путешествие к Королю /страны по ту сторону/ Золота; long — длинный; долгий, продолжительный; behind — сзади, позади), to ask his daughter of him (чтобы попросить у него его дочь; to ask — спрашивать; просить)."
"Where are we going now?" asked the king's son.
"We are going on a long journey to Ri Chuil an Or [King Behind the Gold], to ask his daughter of him."
The two travelled on (они шли дальше: «двое продолжили двигаться»; to travel — путешествовать; двигаться, перемещаться, передвигаться), till they came to the castle of King Behind the Gold (пока не пришли к замку Короля /страны по ту сторону/ Золота). Then Shaking-head said (тогда Качающаяся голова сказал), "Go in you (вы идите в /замок/), and ask his daughter of the king (и попросите у короля его дочь), and I'll stay here outside with the cloak on me (а я останусь здесь снаружи, одетый в плащ-/невидимку/: «с плащом на мне»)."
The two travelled on, till they came to the castle of King Behind the Gold. Then Shaking-head said, "Go in you, and ask his daughter of the king, and I'll stay here outside with the cloak on me."
So he went in and spoke to the king (и вот он пошел в /замок/ и заговорил с королем), and the answer he got was this (и вот какой ответ он получил: «и ответ, который он получил, был таким»): — "I am willing to give you my daughter (я согласен отдать тебе свою дочь; willing — готовый, согласный), but you won't get her (но ты ее не получишь) unless you do (пока ты /не/ выполнишь то) what she will ask of you (что она от тебя попросит; to ask — спрашивать; просить).
So he went in and spoke to the king, and the answer he got was this: — "I am willing to give you my daughter, but you won't get her unless you do what she will ask of you.
And I must tell you now (а теперь я должен тебе сказать) that three hundred kings' sons, lacking one (что без одного триста королевичей: «триста королевский сыновей без одного»; to lack — испытывать недостаток /в чем-л./, нуждаться /в чем-л./ недоставать, не хватать, быть недостаточным), have come to ask for my daughter (пришли просить /у меня/ мою дочь), and in the garden behind my castle are three hundred iron spikes (и что в саду позади моего замка есть триста железных кольев), and every spike of them but one is covered with the head of a king's son (и на каждом колышке, кроме одного, — по голове королевского сына: «и каждый колышек из них, кроме одного, покрыт головой королевского сына») who couldn't do what my daughter wanted of him (/каждый из/ которых не смог выполнить того, что моя дочь от него желала), and I'm greatly in dread (и я сильно опасаюсь: «в сильном опасении») that your own head will be put on the one spike (что твоя собственная голова будет насажена: «положена» на тот один колышек) that is left uncovered (который остался непокрытым; to leave /left/ — покидать; оставлять)."
And I must tell you now that three hundred kings' sons, lacking one, have come to ask for my daughter, and in the garden behind my castle are three hundred iron spikes, and every spike of them but one is covered with the head of a king's son who couldn't do what my daughter wanted of him, and I'm greatly in dread that your own head will be put on the one spike that is left uncovered."
"Well (что ж)," said the king's son, "I'll do my best (буду /стараться/ изо всех сил: «сделаю мое самое лучшее»; to do one’s best — сделать все от себя зависящее) to keep my head (чтобы сохранить свою голову /там/; to keep — держать; сохранять, беречь) where it is at present (где она находится сейчас: «в настоящее время»)."
"Stay here in my castle (оставайся здесь, в моем замке)," said the king, "and you'll have good entertainment (и ты получишь доброжелательный прием) till we know can you do (пока мы не узнаем, сможешь ли ты выполнить то) what will be asked of you (о чем тебя попросят)."
"Well," said the king's son, "I'll do my best to keep my head where it is at present."
"Stay here in my castle," said the king, "and you'll have good entertainment till we know can you do what will be asked of you."
At night when the king's son was going to bed (вечером, когда королевич ложился спать; night — ночь; вечер; at night — ночью; вечером; bed — кровать, постель; to go to bed — ложиться спать), the princess gave him a thimble, and said (принцесса дала ему наперсток и сказала), "Have this for me in the morning (сохрани это для меня до утра: «имей это для меня утром»)."
At night when the king's son was going to bed, the princess gave him a thimble, and said, "Have this for me in the morning."
