He put the thimble on his finger (он надел наперсток себе на палец); and she thought it could be easily taken away (а она подумала, что его легко можно было бы снять), if he would sleep (если бы он заснул). So she came to him in the night (поэтому она пришла к нему ночью), with a drink (с напитком; drink — питье; напиток), and said (и сказала), "I give you this in hopes (я даю тебе это с надеждой: «в надеждах») I'll gain more drink by you (что и ты угостишь меня: «я получу больше питья при помощи тебя»)."
He put the thimble on his finger; and she thought it could be easily taken away, if he would sleep. So she came to him in the night, with a drink, and said, "I give you this in hopes I'll gain more drink by you."
He swallowed the liquor (он проглотил напиток), and the princess went away with the empty cup (а принцесса удалилась: «ушла прочь» с пустой чашкой). Then the king's son put the thimble in his mouth (тогда королевич положил наперсток себе в рот) between his cheek and his teeth (между щекой и зубами) for safe keeping (чтобы надежнее сохранить /его/: «для надежной сохранности»; safe — безопасный, находящийся в безопасности; надежный, внушающий доверие; keeping — хранение, сохранности), and was soon asleep (и вскоре заснул).
He swallowed the liquor, and the princess went away with the empty cup. Then the king's son put the thimble in his mouth between his cheek and his teeth for safe keeping, and was soon asleep.
When the princess came to her own chamber (когда принцесса пришла в свою собственную комнату), she struck her maid with a slat an draoichta [a rod of enchantment] (она ударила свою служанку жезлом колдовства = волшебным жезлом; to strike /struck, stricken/; maid — дева, девица; служанка, горничная, прислуга; rod — прут, прутик; жезл, скипетр; enchantment — очарование, обаяние; колдовство, магия, волшебство) and turned her into a rat (и превратила ее в крысу; to turn — поворачивать; to turn smb. into smth. — превращать кого-л. во что-л.); then she made such music of fifes and trumpets (затем она заставила музыку, /издаваемую/ дудками и трубами; to make smb. do smth. — заставлять, побуждать, вынуждать кого-л. делать что-л.) to sound throughout the castle (звучать по всему замку), that every soul in it fell asleep (так что все в нем уснули /крепким/ сном: «что каждая душа в нем уснула»; soul — душа; человек).
When the princess came to her own chamber, she struck her maid with a slat an draoichta [a rod of enchantment] and turned her into a rat; then she made such music of fifes and trumpets to sound throughout the castle, that every soul in it fell asleep.
That minute (в ту же самую минуту), she sent the rat to where the king's son was sleeping (она отправила крысу туда, где спал королевский сын), and the rat put her tail into the nostrils of the young man (и крыса сунула: «положила» свой хвост в ноздри молодому человеку), tickled his nose so that he sneezed (/стала/ щекотать его нос так, что он чихнул) and blew the thimble out of his mouth (и выплюнул: «выдул» наперсток изо рта; to blow /blew, blown/ — дуть). The rat caught it (крыса поймала его; to catch /caught/) and ran away to the princess (и убежала к принцессе), who struck her with the rod of enchantment (которая ударила ее волшебным жезлом) and turned her into a maid again (и снова обратила ее в служанку).
That minute, she sent the rat to where the king's son was sleeping, and the rat put her tail into the nostrils of the young man, tickled his nose so that he sneezed and blew the thimble out of his mouth. The rat caught it and ran away to the princess, who struck her with the rod of enchantment and turned her into a maid again.
Then the princess and the maid set out for the eastern world (затем принцесса и /ее/ служанка направились к восточному царству; to set out — помещать, выставлять /наружу, за дверь и т.п./; отправляться /в путешествие/, выходить, выезжать; world — мир, свет, земля; часть земного шара), taking the thimble with them (взяв с собой наперсток). Shaking-head, who was watching with his cloak on (Качающаяся голова, который наблюдал /за замком, одетый/ в плащ-/невидимку/), unseen by all (невидимый всеми), had seen everything (видел все это), and now followed at their heels (и теперь следовал за ними по пятам).
Then the princess and the maid set out for the eastern world, taking the thimble with them. Shaking-head, who was watching with his cloak on, unseen by all, had seen everything, and now followed at their heels.
