He went into the next room (он вышел в соседнюю комнату; next — следующий; ближайший, соседний) and brought out two pikes (и вынес две пики; to bring /brought/), one of wood (одну из дерева), the other of iron (а другую из железа), and asked me which of the pikes would I take (и спросил меня, какую из пик я возьму). I said (я сказал), 'I'll take the iron one' (я возьму железную) for I thought in my heart (потому что я подумал в глубине души: «в своем сердце»; to think /thought/) that if an attack should come on me (что если я подвергнусь нападению: «что если нападение случится на меня»; to come — приходить, идти; случаться, происходить), I could defend myself better with the iron than the wooden pike (я смог бы защититься лучше железной, чем деревянной пикой).

We had to fast that night (нам пришлось попоститься тем вечером: «той ночью»; to have to do smth. — быть должным, обязанным, вынужденным делать что-л.); and when the man and his twelve daughters ate the flesh of the stork (а когда мужчина = хозяин и его двенадцать дочерей съели мясо аиста; to eat /ate, eaten/; flesh — плоть, тело; мясо, мясная пища), they hurled the bare bones in the faces of my sons and myself (они швырнули голые = обглоданные кости нам в лицо: «в лица моих сыновей и меня самого»).

We had to fast that night; and when the man and his twelve daughters ate the flesh of the stork, they hurled the bare bones in the faces of my sons and myself.

"Next morning, when we were going away, the man of the house asked me to stay a while; and going into the next room, he brought out twelve loops of iron and one of wood, and said to me,
'Put the heads of your twelve sons into the iron loops (вложи головы своих двенадцати сыновей в эти двенадцать петель), or your own head into the wooden one (или свою собственную голову в одну деревянную петлю); and I said (и я сказал), 'I'll put the twelve heads of my sons in the iron loops (я вложу двенадцать голов моих сыновей в железные петли), and keep my own out of the wooden one (и уберегу свою собственную от деревянной петли; to keep — держать; to keep smb. out of smth. — не пускать кого-л. куда-л.; не подвергать кого-л. чему-л., оберегать кого-л. от чего-л.).'
'Put the heads of your twelve sons into the iron loops, or your own head into the wooden one; and I said, 'I'll put the twelve heads of my sons in the iron loops, and keep my own out of the wooden one.'
