Now he was happy (теперь он был счастлив), and the giant's daughter had good meat and drink put before him (и дочь великана выставила вкусную еду и питье перед ним; good — хороший; свежий, неиспорченный, доброкачественный; to put /put/).

When the giant himself came home (когда великан пришел домой; to come /came, come/), he asked (он спросил),

"How did you do your work today (как ты сегодня поработал: «как ты сделал твою работу сегодня»)?"

Now he was happy, and the giant's daughter had good meat and drink put before him.

When the giant himself came home, he asked,

"How did you do your work today?"

"I did it well (я сделал ее хорошо); I thought nothing of it (пустяки: «я думал ничего о ней»; to think /thought/ — думать, мыслить; полагать, считать, иметь какое-л. мнение; nothing — ничего; to think nothing of smth. — быть дурного мнения о чем-л.; считать что-л. пустяком)."

"Did you find the slumber-pin (ты нашел сонную булавку)?"

"I did indeed (конечно /нашел/; indeed — в действительности, фактически; /усиление/ безусловно, конечно); here 't is for you (вот, пожалуйста: «здесь она для тебя»)."

"I did it well; I thought nothing of it."

"Did you find the slumber-pin?"

"I did indeed; here 't is for you."

"Oh (о)! then (тогда)," said the giant, "it is either the devil or my daughter (либо сам дьявол, либо моя дочь) that helped you to do that work (помогли тебе сделать ту работу), for I know you never did it alone (потому что я знаю, ты вовсе не в одиночку выполнил ее: «ты никоим образом не сделал ее один»; never — никогда; /эмоц.-усил./ нисколько, никоим образом)."

"It's neither the devil (это ни дьявол) nor your daughter (ни твоя дочь), but my own strength that did the work (а моя собственная сила, которая и выполнила ту работу)," said the son of the king of Erin (сказал сын короля Ирландии).

"Oh! then," said the giant, "it is either the devil or my daughter that helped you to do that work, for I know you never did it alone."

"It's neither the devil nor your daughter, but my own strength that did the work," said the son of the king of Erin.

"You have done the work (ты выполнил: «сделал» работу; to do /did, done/); now you must have your meat (теперь тебе нужно поесть: «ты должен съесть твою пищу»; to have /had/ — иметь; получать; принимать /пищу, лекарство и т.п./, пить, есть; meat — мясо; пища, еда)."

"I want no meat today (я не хочу сегодня никакой еды); I am well satisfied as I am (я вполне сыт: «вполне удовлетворен, как я есть»; well — хорошо, отлично; вполне; to satisfy — удовлетворять, давать удовлетворение; утолять /голод/, насыщать)," said the king's son.

"Well (хорошо)," said the giant, "since you'll have no meat (раз ты не будешь есть: «не будешь есть никакой еды»), you must go to sleep in the tank (ты должен пойти спать в чан /с водой/)."

He went into the tank (он пошел в чан). The giant himself was soon snoring (сам великан вскоре /уже/ храпел: «был вскоре храпящим»; to snore), for he was tired (потому что он устал: «был уставшим») from hunting over Erin all day (оттого, что охотился по всей Ирландии весь день).

"You have done the work; now you must have your meat."

"I want no meat today; I am well satisfied as I am," said the king's son.

"Well," said the giant, "since you'll have no meat, you must go to sleep in the tank."

He went into the tank. The giant himself was soon snoring, for he was tired from hunting over Erin all day.
