Then the eldest of the three sisters said to the king's son, "What kind are you, and where were you born?"

"I was born in Erin," said he; "and when I was a little boy my mother died, my father married again and had a second son, and that son wasn't to the eye what I was, and my stepmother was for banishing me from my father's house because she thought her own son was not so good as I was, and I am fishing here every day by the lake to keep out of her sight."
"Well (ну)," said the eldest sister (сказала старшая сестра), "I thought you were a king's son (я думала, что ты королевский сын), and so I came to you in my own form to know (поэтому я и пришла к тебе в своем собственном облике, чтобы узнать; form — форма, внешний вид; обличие) could we go on in the world together (не могли бы мы продолжать идти по этому свету вместе)."
"I don't know yet what to do (я пока еще не знаю, что делать)," said the king's son.
"Well (что ж), be sure of your mind tomorrow (подумай до завтра: «будь уверен в своих помыслах завтра»; mind — ум, разум; мысли, думы, стремление, помыслы), for that will be the last day for me here (потому что это будет последний день, когда я еще буду здесь: «для меня здесь»)."
"Well," said the eldest sister, "I thought you were a king's son, and so I came to you in my own form to know could we go on in the world together."
"I don't know yet what to do," said the king's son.
"Well, be sure of your mind tomorrow, for that will be the last day for me here."
When the cowboy was going home (когда пастух собирался идти домой), the king's son gave him the sleeping-pin for the stepmother (королевский сын отдал ему сонную булавку, /чтобы тот вернул ее/ мачехе: «для мачехи»; to give /gave, given/). When he had driven in the cattle (когда он загнал скот /обратно в замок/; to drive /drove, driven/), the cowboy told the queen (пастух рассказал королеве; to tell /told/) that the young man had fallen asleep as on the two other days (что молодой человек заснул, как и в два предыдущих: «других» дня; to fall /fell, fallen/ — падать).
When the cowboy was going home, the king's son gave him the sleeping-pin for the stepmother. When he had driven in the cattle, the cowboy told the queen that the young man had fallen asleep as on the two other days.
But there was an old witch in the place (однако жила одна старая ведьма в тех краях: «в том месте») who was wandering about the lake that day (которая бродила возле озера в тот день). She saw everything (она все видела), went to the queen (пошла к королеве), and told her (и рассказала ей) how the three swans had made young women of themselves (как три лебедя обратились в молодых девушек: «как три лебедя сделали молодых женщин из себя»; to make /made/), and talked with her stepson (и разговаривали с ее пасынком).
But there was an old witch in the place who was wandering about the lake that day. She saw everything, went to the queen, and told her how the three swans had made young women of themselves, and talked with her stepson.
