Сын ткача и великан Белого Холма

Night came (наступила ночь; to come /came, come/ — приходить, идти; наступать, приходить), but no sight of the girl (а дочки не видать: «но никакого вида девочки»). The next time he went for faggots (/когда/ в следующий раз он пошел за вязанками хвороста; time — время; раз, случай; to go /went, gone/), the weaver took his second daughter to the wood (ткач взял свою вторую дочь в лес; to take /took, taken/ — брать; to take smb. to a place — доставлять, отвозить, отводить кого-л. куда-л.; брать кого-л. с собой куда-л.); and when they had two bundles gathered (и когда они собрали две связки), and were ready to go home (и были готовы идти домой), a second stranger came on horseback (второй незнакомец приехал верхом на лошади), much finer than the first (/этот незнакомец был/ еще лучше первого: «гораздо прекраснее, чем первый»; much — очень, много; намного; гораздо; fine — утонченный, изящный; красивый, имеющий привлекательную внешность), and asked the weaver would he give him his daughter (и /он/ спросил у ткача, отдаст ли он ему свою дочь).

Night came, but no sight of the girl. The next time he went for faggots, the weaver took his second daughter to the wood; and when they had two bundles gathered, and were ready to go home, a second stranger came on horseback, much finer than the first, and asked the weaver would he give him his daughter.

"I will not (не отдам: «я не /отдам»)," said the weaver.

"Well (ну)," said the stranger, "I'll give you her weight in silver (я дам тебе ее вес серебром: «в серебре») if you'll let her go with me (если ты отпустишь ее со мной: «если ты позволишь ей пойти со мной»; to let — позволять; to let smb. do smth. — разрешить, позволить кому-л. сделать что-л.)," and he put the silver down before him (и он положил серебро перед ним).

The weaver carried home the silver (ткач увез домой это серебро) and buried it in the garden with the gold (и закопал его в саду вместе с золотом), and the daughter went away with the man on horseback (а дочь уехала прочь вместе с всадником: «с мужчиной, /который ехал/ верхом»).

"I will not," said the weaver.

"Well," said the stranger, "I'll give you her weight in silver if you'll let her go with me," and he put the silver down before him.

The weaver carried home the silver and buried it in the garden with the gold, and the daughter went away with the man on horseback.

When he went again to the wood (когда он пошел снова в лес; to go /went, gone/), the weaver took his third daughter with him (ткач взял с собой свою третью дочь); and when they were ready to go home (а когда они были готовы идти домой), a third man came on horseback (появился третий мужчина на коне: «приехал верхом третий мужчина»), gave the weight of the third daughter in copper (дал /отцу/ вес /его/ третьей дочери медью: «в меди»), and took her away (и увез ее с собой: «забрал ее прочь»). The weaver buried the copper with the gold and silver (ткач закопал медь вместе с золотом и серебром).

When he went again to the wood, the weaver took his third daughter with him; and when they were ready to go home, a third man came on horseback, gave the weight of the third daughter in copper, and took her away. The weaver buried the copper with the gold and silver.

Now, the wife was lamenting and moaning night and day (в то время /его/ жена плакала и причитала и ночью, и днем; now — теперь, сейчас, ныне; /в повествовании/ тогда, в тот момент, в то время; to moan — стонать; /поэт./ оплакивать, жаловаться) for her three daughters (о своих трех дочерях), and gave the weaver no rest (и не давала ткачу покоя; given/; rest — сон, отдых; покой) till he told the whole story (пока он не рассказал всё: «целую историю»; to tell /told/; story — рассказ, повесть; история, предание, сказка).

Now, the wife was lamenting and moaning night and day for her three daughters, and gave the weaver no rest till he told the whole story.

Now, a son was born to them (и вот у них родился сын; to bear /bore, born/ — носить, переносить, перевозить; рождать, производить на свет); and when the boy grew up (и когда мальчик вырос; to grow /grew, grown/ расти) and was going to school (и /уже/ ходил в школу), he heard how his three sisters had been carried away (он узнал /о том/, как его сестры были увезены прочь; to hear /heard/ — слышать; услышать, узнать /о чем-л./; to carry — нести, носить; вести, возить) for their weight in gold and silver and copper (за их вес золотом, серебром и медью); and every day when he came home (и каждый день, когда он приходил домой) he saw how his mother was lamenting (он видел, как его мать плачет) and wandering outside in grief through the fields (и скитается по округе в печали по полям; outside — с наружной стороны /чего-л./, снаружи; на улице, вне дома, помещения и т.п.; through — через, сквозь; указывает на движение по какой-л. территории: по) and pits (ямам) and ditches (и канавам), so he asked her what trouble was on her (поэтому он спросил у нее, что ее так тревожит: «какое беспокойство было на ней»); but she wouldn't tell him a word (но она не хотела говорить ему ни слова).

Now, a son was born to them; and when the boy grew up and was going to school, he heard how his three sisters had been carried away for their weight in gold and silver and copper; and every day when he came home he saw how his mother was lamenting and wandering outside in grief through the fields and pits and ditches, so he asked her what trouble was on her; but she wouldn't tell him a word.
