The red-haired man went his way (рыжеволосый мужчина пошел своей дорогой), and the boy travelled on (а мальчик = юноша продолжил путешествие). Before evening a great shower came (/незадолго/ до вечера: «перед вечером» пошел сильный ливень; great — большой, огромный; сильный, интенсивный, высокий, большой /о действиях, процессах и т.п./), and he ran for shelter to a large oak-tree (и он побежал к большому дубу, чтобы укрыться: «для укрытия к большому дубовому дереву»; to run /ran, run/; shelter — кров, пристанище; укрытие, прикрытие, защита). When he got near the tree (когда он подбежал близко к дереву; to get /got/ — доставать, добывать; to get to a place — попадать, куда-л., добираться до какого-л. места) his foot slipped (он поскользнулся: «его нога скользнула»; to slip — скользить, плавно или быстро передвигаться; поскользнуться), the ground opened (земля раскрылась = разверзлась), and down he went through the earth (и он полетел вниз: «вниз он двинулся сквозь землю») till he came to another country (пока не долетел: «/не/ добрался» до другой страны).
The red-haired man went his way, and the boy travelled on. Before evening a great shower came, and he ran for shelter to a large oak-tree. When he got near the tree his foot slipped, the ground opened, and down he went through the earth till he came to another country.
When he was in the other country (когда он оказался в другой стране) he put on the cloak of darkness (он надел плащ-невидимку: «плащ тьмы») and went ahead like a blast of wind (и устремился: «пошел» вперед, словно порыв ветра), and never stopped till he saw a castle in the distance (и ни разу не остановился, пока не увидел замок вдалеке; never — никогда; ни разу; to see /saw, seen/; distance — расстояние; большое расстояние, отдаленность, даль; in the distance — в отдалении, вдали, вдалеке); and soon he was there (и вскоре он оказался там). But he found nine gates closed before him (но он обнаружил, /что/ девять ворот были заперты перед ним; to find /found/ — находить, обнаруживать), and no way to go through (и невозможно было пройти через них: «и никакого пути, чтобы пройти насквозь»). It was written inside the cloak of darkness (внутри плаща-невидимки «плаща тьмы» было написано; to write /wrote, written/) that his eldest sister lived in that castle (что его старшая сестра живет в этом замке; eld /архаич./ = old; eldest — самый старший).
When he was in the other country he put on the cloak of darkness and went ahead like a blast of wind, and never stopped till he saw a castle in the distance; and soon he was there. But he found nine gates closed before him, and no way to go through. It was written inside the cloak of darkness that his eldest Sister lived in that castle.
He was not long at the gate looking in (он недолго пробыл у ворот, заглядывая внутрь) when a girl came to him and said (когда какая-то девочка подошла к нему и сказала), "Go on out of that (уходи отсюда: «иди вперед из этого»); if you don't (если не /уйдешь/), you'll be killed (ты будешь убит)."
"Do you go in (пойди внутрь)," said he to the girl (сказал он девочке), "and tell my sister, the woman of this castle (и скажи моей сестре, хозяйке этого замка; woman — женщина; castle — замок; woman of the castle — хозяйка замка), to come out to me (выйти ко мне)."
He was not long at the gate looking in when a girl came to him and said, "Go on out of that; if you don't, you'll be killed."
"Do you go in," said he to the girl, "and tell my sister, the woman of this castle, to come out to me."
The girl ran in (девочка побежала в /замок/; to run /ran, run/); out came the sister, and asked (сестра вышла из /замка/ и спросила), "Why are you here (почему ты здесь), and what did you come for (и для чего = зачем ты пришел)?"
"I have come to this country to find my three sisters (я пришел в эту страну, чтобы найти трех своих сестер; to come /came, come/), who were given away by my father (которые были отданы моим отцом; to give /gave, given/) for their weight in gold (/взамен/ на их вес золотом), silver (серебром), and copper (и медью); and you are my eldest sister (и ты — моя старшая сестра)."
The girl ran in; out came the sister, and asked, "Why are you here, and what did you come for?"
"I have come to this country to find my three sisters, who were given away by my father for their weight in gold, silver, and copper; and you are my eldest sister."
